Considered one of the best stretches of commercially run river in the world, Batoka Gorge provides one of the most intense sensory thrills imaginable. Its 25 white-water rapids and striking scenery deep within the sheer black cliffs afford the adrenaline junkie a wild roller-coaster ride along a route carved over millennia by the Great Zambezi.Safpar offer both a Full Day and a Half-Day experience, and the season is split into the Low / High Water.

Rapids #1 – 10
The 10 rapids we encounter for the day will be fun, but challenging! Our experienced crew are there to see you through some of the most intense white-water on the planet, you will be tested by Class 3-5 Rapids with names such as Morning Glory, Stairway to Heaven, The Devils Toilet Bowl and the Mighty Muncher before our second portage of the day around the Class 6 Rapid 9 Commercial Suicide – watch our kayakers take on one of the biggest waves on any River!

Rapids #11-25
The section of the Zambezi River encountered today is a little less challenging than Day 1. Or is it? Meet the Three Ugly Sisters closely followed by the Washing Machine, Terminator 1 and 2 and the world-famous Rapid 18 Oblivion. It is certainly the most photographed in the world and results in more flips than any other on the planet. It’s the ultimate rapid in many ways. Very runnable, with three waves, the third of which during the month of October when run in the middle will either flip most rafts or surf them, sometimes both.
Note! A cable car lift out of the gorge is used at Rapid #25, this is included in all Rafting Trips ending here. Rafting Trips ending at Rapid #10 require all rafters to hike 200m out of the gorge, this can be challenging in the warmer months in the middle of the day!

Wildlife
Due to the steepness of the Gorge, wildlife is not abundant. On occasion klipspringer, rock hyrax, vervet monkeys and baboon are spotted. However, the birdlife is far more spectacular. Black eagle, augur buzzard, black stork, pied and giant kingfisher and red winged starling are some of the birds normally seen during the trips and sightings of the very rare Taita Falcon are not uncommon. There are crocodile in the river, but they are small due to the unsuitability of the area for their habitation.

Insurance
All clients are covered by Special Emergency Services (a private paramedic service based in Livingstone) through Safari Par Excellence; however, this only covers them for emergency evacuation in life threatening situations. It does not cover hospitalization and medication. Travel and medical insurance is compulsory for all clients at your own expense / arrangement.

Minimum and Maximum Numbers
Minimum of 2 clients. Rafting – maximum of 100 clients, Riverboard and Raft Combo – maximum of 12 clients.

Q – ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS?
A – A National Heritage fee for ‘River Usage’ of $10pp is included in the rafting price – note that these
costs are outside of our control and subject to change without notice. Any additional costs for merchandise you may wish to buy i.e. DVD of your day’s rafting / t-shirts etc plus drinks when back at The Victoria Falls Waterfront is excluded.

Q – WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CLIENTS?
A – 4 Clients minimum, large groups on request

Q – DO YOU HAVE AN AGE RESTRICTION?
A – The minimum age is 15 years old. The maximum age limit is dependent on the individual’s general state of health and physical fitness.

Q – WHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE AND FITNESS DO I NEED?
A – No previous rafting experience is required, the ability to swim is necessary. At the beginning and at the end of the half day raft trip clients have to negotiate a steep path in and out of the gorge. The walk out is 750 vertical feet up a gradient of 1 in 3, and a person of average fitness can manage this in approximately 20 minutes.

Q – I’M A BIT CONCERNED ABOUT HOW FIT I AM?
A – If you’re a bitworried about this then take the easier optionand do a half day PM trip where there is a lift out and the water is a lot more forgiving, but keep in mind the walk in is steep and tricky.

Q- WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR FOR WHITE WATER RAFTING?
A -Recommended dress for the day’s rafting is light outdoor sandals or trainers, shorts and T Shirt. A cap can also be worthwhile beneath the helmet. Clients should not take any valuables with them on the river. Valuables may be placed in a secure container and will be looked after by Safari Par Excellence for the duration of the day’s activity. On your return your valuables can be reclaimed.

Q – DO WE NEED TO TAKE WATER ON THE RAFTS?
A – Drinking water is provided on all rafts.

Q – WILL THERE BE VIDEOS AND PHOTOGRAPHS?
A – Whilst on the river, videos and photographs will be taken by Zambezi Memories. Rafting videos and photographs will be shown immediately after the trip arrives back at the Zambezi Waterfront. Copies of all products shown are available for purchase.

Q – CAN I TAKE MY CAMERA ON THE RAFT?
A – We recommend against this, it’s highly possible that the camera will get wet and damaged, or dropped in the river! There are professional photographers and videographers who will record your day on the river.

Q – DO I NEED TO TAKE MY PASSPORT?
A – Once in Zambia passports are best left at your hotel.

Q – WHAT ABOUT THE RAFTS AND EQUIPMENT?
A – The company uses some of the finest equipment on the market to ensure that the trip is a safe and enjoyable one. Rafts are purchased from Ark in South Africa and are tried and tested river rafts required for the Zambezi River. Safari Par Excellence only uses ‘high flotation life jackets’ and Protec designed safety helmets which are issued to clients before the day’s rafting. Wet suit tops are provided during the colder months (June / July).

A – Safari Par Excellence is currently the only company on the Zambezi with a 100% guide certification under the International Rafting Federation. All guides are fully trained professionals and hold valid advanced first aid certificates. Whilst every precaution is taken, it is essential that agents make clients aware that there is a risk of injury associated with the activity of rafting on the Zambezi. A comprehensive first aid kit and skid stretcher is carried on each trip. Each client is required to sign the Safari Par Excellence White Water Rafting indemnity form prior to departure. Each trip leader carries a Sat phone and is in radio contact with our bases in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Livingstone, Zambia and covered by S.E.S (Specialty Emergency Services) based in Livingstone Zambia

Q- WHAT INSURANCE DO I NEED?
A – All clients are covered by Specialty Emergency Services (S.E.S) through Safari Par Excellence; however this only covers them for emergency evacuation in life threatening situations. It does not cover hospitalizationand medication. As such travel and medical insurance is compulsory for all clients. Please ensure all clients bring the details of their insurance policy with them.
